In Memoriam

We regret to inform the Scripps community of the death of James P. "Jim" Costello at the age of 70, February 15, in Ocean Beach. Jim started at Scripps in late 1955 as part of the CalCOFI program and the ONR-funded ASW studies. Later, he worked in the GEOSECS program and ODF and returned in 1991. Elizabeth Venrick says, "He was a good shipmate to many of us!" Jim will rest at Fort Rosecrans with his late wife Sonny. The date of the service is pending. Our heartfelt condolences go to their daughter, Kim Costello, of San Diego and their son, Mark Costello, of Laguna Beach.(George Hemingway, x44236)

NEW AGU FELLOWS -- Cathy Constable and Peter Shearer, both in IGPP, have been elected Fellows in the American Geophysical Union. Congratulations! (Scripps Communications, x43624)

NOSB REPORT - Thanks to the spirit of Scripps and the hard work of many volunteers, this year's National Ocean Science Bowl'99 (NOSB) was a solid success! The end round was a thrilling as last year's. Going into the final round, there was significant potential for a first place four-way tie! As it turned out, Mt. Carmel High School won a decisive round and will be representing southern California in Washington, D.C. in April. Scripps, along with runner up high schools, will continue to support Mt. Carmel with supplemental academic coaching and practice scrimmages. This year's ten participating NOSB high schools were: Carlsbad, Helix, La Jolla, Mar Vista, Mt. Carmel, Poway, Rancho Buena Vista, Scripps Ranch, Torrey Pines, and Woodbridge (Irvine). Liz Winant, Birch Aquarium, did a marvelous job as event director. Scripps Director Charlie Kennel welcomed the students in the morning, and Birch Aquarium Executive Director Ned Smith presented awards at the concluScrippsn. The students were clearly enthusiastic about repeating the event next year. While Scripps gave much to host these bright neighborhood kids, the students in return provided something materially back: a unique opportunity for Scripps faculty, staff, and graduate students of all curricular groups to work together in producing a significant event highlighting our field of science. Thanks again for everyone's help! (Kevin Hardy, x46937)

AUTHOR HOMERO ARIDJIS TO APPEAR AT UCSD BOOKSTORE Homero Aridjis will appear at the UCSD Bookstore on, Thursday, March 4. He will participate in a discusScrippsn sesScrippsn about his various works from 4 p.m.-5 p.m. At 58, he is the prize-winning author of 26 books of poetry and prose. In 1985 Aridjis co-founded the Grupo de los Cien, a group of one hundred internationally renowned artists and intellectuals that became actively engaged with environmental problems. Ship News and Schedule

R/V Melville, Nova Leg 2 Weekly Report - The Melville has now completed the fourth week of its marine geological/geophysical investigation of seamounts and atolls in the Gilbert/Tokelau region. We sampled and surveyed the northern portion of this chain, between Howland Island and Winslow Reef. We continue to be able to use the Sandwell/Smith predicted bathymetry to our advantage, and we are very pleased to find out that these seamounts are petrologically much more diverse and easier to dredge than the Gilbert chain. Most dredges contain multiple sample types that appear dateable by 40 Ar/39Ar techniques. All systems work well, we recovered 41dredges, with an average recovery of 400 pounds of rock per dredge (one dredge lost). The Melville's Robertson dynamic positioning system proved to be extremely useful in successfully aiding our way out of a couple of hairy dredge hang-ups. Science and ship crew continue to be in great shape and work well together.

Faces of station 306--------------------

Station 306b
Like a long lost friend
Strikes up a conversation
As if no time has passed.

What- you went to Carnival
And that piddly station 307 as well?
You are not remaining faithful to me,
As you said you would in the preliminary cruise plan.

But yes we are.
The tripods are only for you.
We always return to you.
Without you there is no oxygen deficient zone station.

Don't leave me for the trench transect.
What will I do while you are gone?
I'm lonely without you.
The trench is no place for a tripod.

How many times must we say it?
No tripod at the trench.
Perhaps no trench transect at all,
You mock us, and provide no data.

So we remain in your clutches,
Dastardly station 306.
Mentally we must soldier forward.
Despite staying with you
As if in a bad marriage.

What face will you wear next,
Station 306c?
Log books---------

We sneak like a little brother
Into our sisters room
To read her diary.
Secrets from the depths?
Lets write them up for publication.

Waiting for the nepheloid-------------------------

CTD 306b-13, what do you seek?
Why, I'm waiting for the nepheloid.
Squint really hard as you peek.
See you for real next time?
