E-mail:
E-mail is operated on a store-and-forward basis. Messages are queued on E-mail servers ashore and on the ship. Periodically throughout the day the Shipboard Computer Group technician initiates a connection with the shore station via Inmarsat satellite, transfers all messages held on the ship, receives all messages held ashore, and disconnects from the satellite. These connections are arranged on a per-cruise basis to meet the requirements of the research and to take advantage, as much as possible, of off-peak satellite rates. There are normally 3 connections per day.
All users are responsible for the cost of E-mail traffic both to and from the ship. Science party members (and crew) are allotted a $1/day allowance for E-mail expenses. Costs in excess of this allowance will be collected from users at the completion of each cruise.
Future planned upgrades/refits: Replace MK 23 gyro, replace winch readouts, radars and fathometer.
