One of the Chilean groups wants to take a line of stations starting within
200 nm of shore.
I hope another group would start radiosondes in coastal waters and continue
along
the track line. We would, ourselves, not need to take CTD stations, but
would very much
like to start the underway sampling (IMET, thermosalinograph, ADCP) just after
clearing the port up until just before entering port.

During MELVILLE's January overhaul we replaced both lower thruster gear sets with improved ones. After the overhaul we did a sea trial and were able to comfortable reach 177 RPM on both thrusters at power limit on two large generators (the third large engine was inoperative at that time). This translates to about 12.2 knots. Max RPM is about 196 RPM. We plan transits at around 11.5 kts speed made good over the ground. I think that you can be confident using that estimate for your calculations. Given reasonable weather conditions you might do better.   Tom     At 12:16 PM 3/9/00 -0500, you wrote: >Capt. Scientists will be able to use realtime plots and displays during their mooring work.   2) As for STS, the value of Seabeam data that may be collected in Chilean waters does not offset the difficulty of dealing with the clearance.   3) If B. Eakins wants the data and can fulfill the clearance requirements, then there will be no Seabeam user fee from STS for this data.   4) STS is not prepared to cover any expenses (other than operation of the Seabeam system) resulting from the Chilean clearance, e.g. travel costs for observer.   5) If Dr. Weller would like the ADCP and met data from Chilean waters, then he will need to satisfy the delivery of data to satisfy clearance requirements.   - Woody     > >>Liz: It is OK by me if the SeaBeam runs. Regarding the ship agent, we probably won't have one until end of April, we will update you as soon as the information comes in.   In answer to you question regarding Chilean observer, we should offer two spaces for observers but can argue for one if we can justify it. Since you are departing and arriving from the same port travel costs should not be great. We could ask that your colleagues in Chile be named as the official observer(s), at this point we'll need to know their names and places of employment to list them on the clearance request, if we decide to go ahead with the request to Chile.     Liz             Bob, thanks for your reply. I'll see exactly what Eakins has in mind for Sea Beam. On NSF cruises sea beam is collected as part of the tech rate.... in this case he would have to come up with the survey money.   I'll check with Althouse tomorrow regarding the agent. I don't believe we have one yet.   Cheers Rose     Liz: It is OK by me if the SeaBeam runs. I would very much like to have it in operation when we are surveying in the bottom prior to chosing a site and deploying the surface mooring. If I can get SeaBeam during the mooring work at no cost in return for letting it run during the cruise, then I'd be very happy to grant the request.   I have just started making contacts with colleagues in Chile. If they want to participate in the cruise, what paperwork will you require?   If we take data in Chilean waters, perhaps underway meteorology and ADCP as well as the SeaBeam, will we need a Chilean observer?   Have you identified an agent in Arica?     I plan to come to the precruise meeting in two weeks along with our mooring technician.     Regards, Bob   >Dr. Weller > >Any decision on this?
